Mother’s Day is the perfect time to spoil your mum and confirm how much you love her, so start making your plans now. If you ask her, she will probably tell you that she does not want a big fuss; however, this is the perfect occasion to thank her for everything she does for you. There are also plenty of special ‘understated’ options, so have a think about whether you want a big family day out or a more intimate afternoon tea for two.
Lunch at a stunning manor house
A delicious lunch is always a good option and can be a great choice if there are a few of you sharing the occasion, especially for several generations. There are lots of beautiful houses and hotels around the country, with many offering child-friendly catering; alternatively, if she is a fan of a classic period drama, pick a four-course meal at the Castle Grove Country House in Letterkenny or Hayfield Manor in Co Cork. Book early to make sure you can reserve a table in these beautiful surroundings.
Afternoon tea
If a full-blown lunch is too much, afternoon tea might be more appropriate; ‘done properly’, this can be a real treat. Afternoon tea is not something most of us do very often; therefore, getting the chance to stop in the afternoon and indulge ourselves can be very decadent. There are lots of great places in Ireland for delicious afternoon tea with delicate sandwiches and fresh cakes, but our favourite is the G Hotel in Galway with its dedicated ladies’ salon.
Embrace some hot air
Depending on how adventurous your mum is, why not give her a day to remember forever and take to the skies in a hot air balloon? This is not a cheap option, but it will be a gift she will never forget. This is a completely different way of seeing some of Ireland’s spectacular scenery and getting a new perspective on things. There are ballooning opportunities in Limerick, Kilkenny and Co Meath.
Perfect picnic
It might not feel like picnic weather; however, if you prepare properly and take the right clothing, this can be a wonderful way to experience the beautiful Irish countryside or spectacular coastline. Wrap up well and consider adding soup to your picnic basket! Wicklow is a good option, whether Sugar Loaf Mountain or the stunning Powerscourt Waterfall, or head to coast at Portsalon in Donegal. Take some photos of the day, such as you and your mum together and the great outdoors. You can even add to your gift by making some of these images into a memento of the day, such as a canvas for your mum’s wall.
